Friday night Prime

I spent most of my formative years alone. Not really because I was weird and didn't have a lot of friends (I was and didn't) but more because the things that kids my age were doing were of little to no interest to me.

I remember being 13 years old, I was in 8th grade, and all the girls in my class were getting their panties in a bunch about heading to the local cinaplex to see what ever random teen movie that was released that week.
The exciting part for them is that they intended on meeting up with a number of boys from our class. The whole afternoon brake after lunch was dedicated to who was going to sit next to whom, and what flavor lip gloss they should wear. Now don't get me wrong, I liked the boys just as much as the other girls in my class, and the idea of pressing my lips against my cute olive skinned science neighbor's was more than appealing, but the idea of setting myself up for disappointment, or worse awkwardness beyond my normal daily awkwardness just seemed awful to me.
No for me skipping such an outing was really the best course of action to preserve the tiny bit of cool I had left. Lets face it, I was a bit of an odd ball, and it was hard to believe that I would be appealing to my jr high-school career crush.
As an aside, I pretty much had a crush on the same boy from the very first day of 5th grade when he and I bonded over our favorite goosebumps books, until the summer before my sophomore year when I met the boy who would end up being my first serious boyfriend... I use the term serious pretty loosely there.
So instead of partaking in the festivities, I spent Friday after Friday doing the same thing. And looking back I have really find memories of it.
Friday nights for me consisted of making dinner, I've always loved to cook, getting into my jammies, spending an hour or two surfing the Internet (we were the first of my friends to have a computer connected to Aol, it was pretty awesome) reading for a while, then at 8 pm the SciFi channel, which was channel 69 (hehe) at the time on Rhode Island providence cox service, started their Friday night lineup!
SciFi Prime, four hours, 8-12pm of some of the most exciting televisions I have ever seen, to this day there isn't much that can compete to the awesomeness that was these shows! Poltergeist: the legacy- a show about a secret society who sought out and investigated paranormal... Stuff!
Sliders- interdementianal travel, bringing civilization to the primitive, falling for your best friend in another universe, kicking your own ass!!
Farscape- the ever brooding, always sexy lost hero battling for a place in the universe as well as the heart of the women he doesn't realize he loves.
And the final hour was a revolving door of shows that dearly made a whole 13 episodes.

That was my Friday night, avoiding my friends to escape to other realities, places that were exciting and dangerous. Filled with people and places far more colorful and interesting than those around me in the real world. Often I become nostalgic for those nights, often spent on the phone, talking to who ever didn't make it out that night. Not saying a word between commercials.
