So I remember the first
time I went to the eye doctors. I was 3 or 4 years old, and my mum brought me
to a d church that had been converted into a number of different offices, the
front entrance with the traditional large wooden double doors was no longer in
commission, instead one entered through a large glass door that was carved into
the large tope colored bricks at the top of a set of concrete steps.
I can't remember much of
what it looked like upon entering the building except that my doctor was to the
left, and I longed to examine the rest of the building. Apparently
foreshadowing for future professional desires.
I remember the mixture
of nerves while I waited, the excitement that built. My mother informed me that
I would get to pick out my own pair of glasses. That I would be able to see
better and not trip over everything anyone; as an aside this was not fully
accurate information, I still to this day Trip, fall and bump into everything
that is out side of the 10 degree cone of vision directly in front of my face.
I don't remember much of
the examination, or the time leading up to getting to pick out my glasses but I
remember the excitement when I was presented with all the colorful frames, a
whole wall full of them, plastic and metal. A virtual ocular rainbow. Reds and
blues, browns and greens! There were so many choices! I remember the joy of
trying in each pair and the smile of the euphoric child gleaming back at me
from the mirror.
I don't known how long
it took me to pick out that first pair, it's a two-hour process these days, but
when I finished, I walked away with a pair of bright red plastic framed glasses.
Now I understand that "bright
red plastic frames" isn't very descriptive. But I'm not sure how to
explain them accurately with out reminding you that this was the 80s. The
frames were HUGE!!! They easily occupied 2/3 of my tiny face. But it mattered not;
I thought that they were the coolest glasses ever!
Not long after I picked
up my first pair of glasses my cousin had a birthday party. I remember how
excited I was to show them off to all my friends and family.
I quickly that day
realized that my glasses resembled those of famous TV personality Sally Jesse
Raphael. But you know what... I didn't give a single fuck! I loved those
frames!! And as far as I was concerned I looked damn fucking cool! And I still
do!
The photo of me with two
of my cousins is not of those original glasses, but as you can see I continued
to make my selection with some delightfully awesome style!
not the original pair but you can see how cool I was |
yea those are the same pair as the ones above!!! |
